Energy Focus - FY07/08 Review
The d-cypha SFE Futures & Options traded volume has continued to show strong and robust liquidity throughout the FY 07/08. Traded volume for the year represented 123% of the underlying NEM physical demand with February 2008 setting the yearly record at 197%.
The highlights for FY07/08 include:
- Open Interest record of 47,496 contracts (COB 30 June) which equates to a face value of $5.9 billion,
- Major growth in options trading, increasing 48% on the FY06/07 options volume, and
- Influx of new financial traders.
The price action over this FY was influenced by the impending launch of a carbon trading scheme, water storage levels and the potential multi billion dollar NSW electricity industry privatisation. The high calendar 2009 prices in 2007 fell sharply in early February 2008 (NSW -27%, QLD -23%, VIC -21%) but by FY end stabilised and retraced moderately.
